Authentic Worship...Can it Happen Outside the Walls of a Church?
Jesus came to get worship “out of the box”. Before Jesus came, “worship” was confined by:
…A specific day of the week - Sabbath
…A specific profession – Priest
…A specific people – Jews
…A specific gender – Men
…A specific place – Temple
…A specific offering – A Sacrifice
…Specific clothing – Ornate Robes
When Jesus delivered his most powerful teaching about “worship” it was not within the confines of a temple nor given to just priests. His message wasn’t delivered while dressed in ornate robes nor was it directed specifically to a narrow group (i.e. Jewish men). Jesus delivered the most “religion shattering” message about worship to a poorly dressed adulterous woman in a barren setting outside the walls of any religious structure. In John’s gospel, Jesus reveals the essence of worship to a half-breed, immoral woman, who had likely never set foot within a temple. He also declared that now was the time for authentic worshipers to worship God in “spirit and truth”. He said, “From here on, worshiping the Father will not be a matter of the right place but with the right heart. For God is a Spirit and he longs to have sincere worshipers who worship and adore him in the realm of the Spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24 TPT)
In this paradigm shifting interaction with this Samaritan and within the demographics of this setting, Jesus revealed that authentic worship is never confined by location, ethnicity, gender, social status or a calendar. Conversely, Jesus' discourse on worship has profound implications for us in every realm of our lives, especially work. There are some powerful implications that can be gleaned from Jesus' teaching in this passage: - Authentic worship only exists in the location of the human heart. (See also Is. 29:13)
- While the expression of our worship at work will be different than in a church, it is no less important to God and should be just as authentic.
- The authenticity of our worship "inside" a church building is only as authentic as our worship "outside" the walls of a church.
